Celtics Stuff Live! Sunday 6/24 from 7PM -10PM, EST, W/Mike Gorman & Tim Weisberg.

JB | June 22nd, 2007

This week, the last show before the 6 hour draft night marathon, Jughead, JB and the Duke will test their endurance with a 3 hour effort.

Our guests will be; Celtics television announcer and 5 time Emmy award winner, Mike Gorman and Tim Weisberg, the Celtics writer for “The Southcoast Standard Times.”
mgormanhshott.jpg
Mike, a Dorchester native, a graduate of Boston Latin and UMass Boston, has seen about as many Celtics games as any man alive, having covered the team since 1891 1981.

Regular “Celtics Stuff Live” listeners greatly appreciate Mike’s observations, directed with a calm demeanor and impressive intellect.

Aside from Tim Weisberg’s sports writing duties, he’s also the host, creator and executive producer of “Spooky Southcoast ” a radio show from New Bedford on 1420AM WBSM, which focuses on his interest in the “paranormal.”

Here’s a timely and rather prophetic insight from his column in “The Standard Times” from May 23rd .

Sorry, Danny, but it’s finally official — luck has run out for this franchise. They can’t even offer up this pick for some of the top-flight talent on the trading block without also coughing up someone like Al Jefferson in the process.

It should be a great show and we hope you will join us on Sunday night, as we get a last run at pre-draft speculation and the rampant trade rumors that will surely not be dying down anytime soon.

You should be able to access the show through normal channels on CelticsBlog, but because the site is switching to it’s new server on Saturday, I’d like to alert you to the old web site: Celticsstufflive.com, which will also have a link to the show in case CelticsBlog is down.

If you have a question for our guest or the show you can call our toll free number (1.866.751.9649) anytime leading up to tip off on Sunday and leave us a voice mail to air live or you can send us an e-mail. As always we will take your calls live during the show and monitor the chat wars in The Pit.

Please Note: Jughead is available in the chat room 30 minutes prior to the start of the show to help make sure you are able to get the stream playing live on your computer. During that time we jump jump to the sounds of Miracle Johan’s epic old school style.

6/17/07 - With Sean Grande & HomeRunBaker

JB | June 16th, 2007

Sunday night Celtics Stuff Live welcomed Celtics radio play by play jefe Sean Grande and Celticsblog’s Home Run Baker to the show. Grande has commented on the show in the past his preference to see more experienced players on the roster and he seemingly hasn’t backed away from that point of view. However, Sean did express an interest in Jeff Green and Yi (or is it EEEEEE?) Jianlian if the Celtics did hold onto the fifth pick, which made The Duke exceedingly happy. The guys wrapped up their call with Sean with some heavy trade rumor talk including the recent revelation that Kobe Bryant wants out of LA.

HomeRunBaker joined the show in the second hour and gave his more pessimistic (realistic?) view of the proceedings on Causeway Street. Though there was not a concerted effort to do so, HRB was followed by a string of similarly concerned fans who don’t exactly drink the kool aid.

This resulted in the phones lighting up and the show ran an extra hour longer to accompany all the Celtics fans with a dying urge to weigh in as the rumors fly.

Join us next week when Mike Gorman returns to Celtics Stuff Live and be sure to leave your voice mails (1.866.751.9649) or e-mails for Mike to answer on the show.

6/10/07 - With Steve Bulpett

JB | June 9th, 2007

Celticsstuff Live welcomed veteran Boston Herald scribe, Steve Bulpett to the show Sunday evening and once again Steve did not disappoint. In an hour long interview, Steve touched on a host of topics with much of the conversation being devoted to who would be the best option with the 5th pick and what veterans the team may be looking at if they consider dealing the draft pick.

In what was an incredibly in depth and wide ranging interview, Steve Bulpett hit all the hot spots Celtics fans are talking about (including Marion and Rashard Lewis trade rumors) and quelled earlier talk about David Blatt joining the organization by repeating Danny Ainge’s insistence that no discussions have taken place thus far.

In what time there was remaining a couple callers weighed in on the ongoing “Shawn Marion to Boston” trade rumors, and Jug stole The Duke’s draft binkie… Jeff Green.

6/4/07 - With Jessica Camerato

The Duke | June 3rd, 2007

swish_02.jpg
Jessica Camerato joined Celticsstuff Live Monday evening to update Jughead, JB, and The Duke on the Orlando Pre-Draft Camp as Jess had the pleasure of being in attendance and had the opportunity to sit down with Doc Rivers in an eye opening interview with the recently extended head coach, Doc Rivers. Jessica gave us her take on some of the prospects available for the Celtics to draft with the 5th pick, and there were a number of trade rumors discussed.

A number of callers gave their take on who their draft binkies are including Elrod Enchilada and Alex of Celtics 247. JB and The Duke shared some new information on the team’s search for a new lead assistant coach with Tom Thibodeau and David Blatt as the only names surfaced to this point. Lastly, JB wrapped the show with his Rock Around the Mocks.

5/27/07 - With Jeff Clark

JB | May 26th, 2007

Celticsstuff Live welcomed their partner-in-crime Jeff Clark of CelticsBlog to hit a number of issues on the docket for C’s fans. A seemingly erroneous report from Israel, by way of Italy, that the team had hired legendary Euroleague coach David Blatt as an assistant coach. Jonathan Givony and Eric Weiss of Draft Express contacted Blatt’s agent and he denied that report in it’s entirety, however Eric and Jonathan will be at the Treviso Eurocamp in a couple of weeks and will speak with Blatt at that time.

A number of voicemails left during the Lottery Night show were played tonight and left a much more positive spin than the nattering nabobs of negativity, Jughead and The Duke, were spinning that evening. JB had a report from Spain that a pair of European players, including Celtics’ property Albert Miralles, will be part of the Celtics entry in the Las Vegas Summer League, adding even more spice to something Celtics fans thirst for having gone 3 months without seeing the guys in green.

Jughead played an interview he had with Allan Ray regarding the process he went through last year at this time as a prospective draftee, as well as some comments from Al Jefferson following the disappointing results of Tuesday night.

If you have a question for our guest or the show you can call our toll free number (1.866.751.9649) anytime leading up to tip off on Sunday and leave us a voice mail to air live or you can send us an e-mail. As always we will take your calls live during the show and monitor the chat wars in The Pit.
We hope you will join us.

5/20/07 - “Bottom Feeders” Night

JB | May 18th, 2007

screenshot_011.jpgCelticsstuff Live welcomed bloggers and observers of three other high lottery teams to discuss all the goings on in Ping Pong Land. Thomas McKee of the Grizzlies’ Beale Street Beat, Davey Miller of the Bucks’ 1420AM The Breeze, and Casey Holdahl of the Blazers’ Oregon Live.com talked with JB, Jughead and The Duke about the state of affairs surrounding their teams going into Tuesday night’s NBA Draft Lottery. Kicking off the show, CSL had Eric Weiss of DraftExpress on to discuss an email the show received about the Celtics interest in Yi Jianlian and to get Weiss’s thoughts on Yi as he had an opportunity to catch one of his workouts a week ago. Wrapping up the show, the CSL Boys took on Bill Simmons, became apprised of comments made by Gary Tanguay on Andy Gresh’s show on ESPN Radio, and finished with a disturbing voice mail left by “Brett”.

Don’t forget to tune in with us Tuesday night as we go LIVE at 9PM to discuss the events of the NBA Draft Lottery and either commiserate or celebrate together. Celtics radio play by play announcer Sean Grande and Foxsports.com’s Senior College Basketball writer Jeff Goodman are due to join the show around what will certainly be a busy night for everyone covering the team and the Draft.

5/13/07 - With Scott Souza

Jughead | May 11th, 2007

Scott Souza, the preeminent Celtics writer for the Metro West Daily News, fresh off a tour de force interview with Danny Ainge, graced the Celticsstuff Live bandstand this week. As always Scott was an excellent guest spending a full hour exploring all the current topics in depth. Much of the discussion was focussed on Doc Rivers’ recent contract extension and a number of Danny’s comments quoted today in Scott’s article addressing the valuation of the Celtics youth, Pierce’s desire to acquire a veteran, preparation for the lottery, and of course his criticism of former Celtics Coach/GM Rick Pitino, “(In 1997) Tracy McGrady is a guy they could have drafted, and one they thought about, and had (Rick) Pitino not had a tie with Kentucky (where Mercer played for him) maybe they do draft Tracy McGrady. And Chauncey Billups and Tracy McGrady could have done some spectacular things in Boston had they waited and had patience.” In the second hour we took calls from the diabolical “Q” and Frank from Boston. Stay tuned for next week’s show as CSLive will host 6 bloggers from around the NBA representing the teams with the best odds of winning the lottery on May 22nd in another Blogger’s Night extravaganza. See you next week!

5/6/07 - With Eric Weiss

JB | May 5th, 2007

With just more than two weeks before the ping pong prelude to the “Saga in Secaucus,” CelticsstuffLive hosted Eric Weiss of Draft Express, the preeminent draft web site for fans and NBA teams as well.

houdini-can.jpg

Not confined to his globe hopping scouting voyages, Eric has spent much of this past season with Celtics credentials covering the team on a nightly basis. Is there anyone with more knowledge of both the potential draft choices and the needs and temperament of the team? I think not! Eric has also been sharing some interviews with Celtic players and contributing articles on Celticblog. His most recent: “Offseason Plans,” replete with embedded audio file interviews (which has become Eric’s trademark), examines the offseason training plans for the current roster players.

Gomes…explained he’ll be spear-heading a team movement out to Vegas in order to workout at Impactbball with noted trainer Joe Abunassar, the former IMG Academy basketball guru…….. Tony Allen and Rajon Rondo are coming along to work on some things and Allan Ray may join them. Other Celtics, such as team captain Paul Pierce and rookie Leon Powe might find their way out there as both spend the offseason in relative proximity to the facilities.

Abunassar’s programs are very progressive, heavily leveraging the expertise of Athletes Performance, an Arizona based firm that has won renown for its performance training work with NFL athletes. The program focuses on different areas, such as carefully constructed diet plans, muscle strength and coordination measurement, flexibility, and strength and conditioning. All of this is of course centered around the skills training work that Abunassar does himself. All the facilities and team members work together to implement the most effective strategy for accomplishing player and team goals with precise, measurable outcomes.

The quality of the daily scrimmage at this facility is top-notch, as many players come in and out of the city all summer to get some high level games and tweak their workout regiments. Top prospects will also be out there including Yi Jianlian and Rudy Fernandez. So, the level of competition and degree of preparation each of the attending Celtics will get should help them improve leaps and bounds over where they left off this season.

4/29/07 - With Michael McCann and Elrod Enchilada

JB | April 27th, 2007

This week, “CelticsstuffLive” presented Michael McCann and Elrod Enchilada. Michael is a world renowned sports law attorney, who hosts the web site: “Sports Law Blog,” which explores some of the more interesting and controversial legal issues in the world of big time sports. profile_mccann.jpgJust this week, Michael has posted a widely quoted article on the the NBA draft at “The Situationalist.” Besides a very detailed analysis of the nuts and bolts of the ping pong ball process, McCann and Co. get into some of the factors that lead to success or failure for the draftees.

…..many, if not most, players selected in the NBA Draft will succeed or fail largely due to the situation of the team that drafts them. In other words, some players will find themselves in the right environment in terms of teammates and coaches and fans, while others will wind up playing in the wrong offense, with the wrong coach, in the wrong city.
……..However, when we evaluate these players, we usually focus on presumed, but often immeasurable and perhaps misunderstood qualities, like “how hard they work” or whether they have the “drive to succeed” (whatever that actually means).

Our other guest, Elrod Enchilada, is well known to Celtic fans as the articulate and entertaining feature writer for “Real GM” and a frequent poster on the Real GM Celtic message board. Elrod’s most recent article; “No Time To Panic: Where Do The Cs Kids Stand?” is the standard by which all season recap articles will be judged.

This has been perhaps the strangest 24-58 season in history. Imagine a team going from 45 to 33 to 24 victories over three seasons. One would expect a fan insurrection, or, as in most NBA cities, fan apathy and vast expanses of empty seats on game night. Coaches in the unemployment line. Yet the Cs remain remarkably popular with their fan base and there is considerable optimism about the team’s future, regardless of the outcome of the all-important lottery for the order of selections in the 2007 draft. It looks like their coach who has overseen this three year collapse will get an extension.
